What Is YOGA?

YOGA means to "yoke" or unite mind, body and spirit. YOGA is effective in maintaining a sound body and mind and restoring health, wellness, flexibility and increasing your range of motion.

YOGA is an ancient practice from India created to prepare the body for long periods of sitting meditation, to maintain and increase the body's strength, flexibility and general health.

YOGA is practiced in four parts- breathing techniques (pranayama) to calm or energize our bodies and increase our lung capacity; the physical postures or asanas to build strength, increase flexibility and balance, tone the body and maintain good posture; deep relaxation- the reward at the end of the class, restoring body and soul.

YOGA reduces stress and anxiety, frees up the breathing and helps fight fatigue by creating energy. A regular practice- even three times per week- will help keep your mind alert and better able to focus and concentrate.

YOGA is very user-friendly to all bodies, shapes and sizes. Age is never a limitation in YOGA. In fact, YOGA practice can help slow down many things we believe are inevitable with aging, keeping one strong and healthy from the inside out.

Pointers For Class

  • Do not eat for two hours before YOGA practice
  • Bring a bottle of water
  • Arrive a few minutes before class begins to calm and center yourself
  • Bring an open mind
  • We practice barefoot
  • Wear loose and comfortable (not baggy) clothing
  • Let your teacher know of any health concerns or injuries before class begins
  • Flow into and out of YOGA postures gracefully
  • Take asanas (poses) to the edge of your comfort zone and to the first point of resistance
  • If you experience pain or discomfort, come to a neutral resting pose immediately
  • Drink water as needed and make sure to drink a full bottle of water within one hour after your YOGA practice
